Emily Henry Does it Again

Am I the only one who devours Emily Henry’s books like I’ve been starved of reading for months?

I finished Funny Story in just two days. Granted, I listened on 2x speed while walking, cleaning, driving—basically anytime I could squeeze it in—but this book had me hooked.

Henry has this incredible way of writing romances that go beyond a typical Hallmark story. Her characters always have depth, and even though the world she builds is small, she weaves everything together in such wonderful harmony.

🚨 SPOILERS AHEAD 🚨

We go into this book knowing it’s a romance, of course, and we’re introduced to the main characters right away. After terrible breakups, Daphne finds herself moving in with Miles.

At first, Miles comes off as this laid-back, pot-smoking guy who mostly keeps to himself. But as the story unfolds, we realize he was just coping the best way he knew how. He’s actually incredibly kind and thoughtful—whenever Daphne asks for something, he listens and adjusts. She asks him to stop smoking inside? He stops immediately. She wants him to add things to the calendar? He does it without complaint.

It’s these little things that make their relationship so heartwarming.

Eventually, they get thrown into a fake-dating situation (because of course), and while we all know where this is headed, it never takes away from the story.

You know how some people hate spoilers because it ruins the journey? Like thriller fans who need the suspense to stay engaged? Funny Story isn’t for that type of reader. But for me? Knowing the ending never takes away from the ride. We go through the ups and downs with these characters, rooting for them and fighting for that happy ending right along with them.

I also love Daphne’s growing friendship with Ashley, her newfound independence, and how she finally stands up to her dad—with Miles supporting her every step of the way. The character growth for both Daphne and Miles felt necessary, but also natural.

Maybe I’m just an Emily Henry stan, but I ate this book up. I loved every minute of it and can’t wait for more. It’s not a revolutionary book, but if you read for entertainment, love happy endings, and want a romance with more depth than a Hallmark movie—then Funny Story is for you.
